Catherine Musham Art

 About Catherine

I am inspired by the myths, fables and stories that all people create to make sense of the world. These narratives can emerge organically within a culture or from an individual’s personal experience.  They represent the universal need to mirror and deflect the complexities of life.

My personal storytelling is pictorial. The paintings I create are comprised of impossible elements of an imagined universe, evoking landscapes of dreams and childhood memories.

These visual stories offer a sense of joy, humor, and a glimpse into a magical world.

Artist Statement

My work is both narrative and non-objective.  The narrative pieces are inspired by the myths, fables and stories that all people create to make sense of the world.  These narratives can emerge organically within a culture or from an individual’s personal experience. They represent the universal need to mirror and deflect the complexities of life.  We make up our own myths.

My personal story telling is pictorial.  The paintings I create are comprised of impossible elements of an imagined universe, evoking  landscapes of dreams and childhood memories.

My non-objective art is composed of messages.   I’m not sure where they come from, perhaps my own psyche, the universal consciousness, or the cosmos. It doesn’t matter because the messages defy precise interpretation. They are visual and beyond the realm of linear thinking and words. They mean one thing to one person and another thing to someone else.

Maybe we have just one message, and it is delivered to us the day we are born, and we are never sure what it says, it may have nothing to do with us personally, but it must be carried by hand through a life, all the way, and at the end handed over, sealed.”
